A trio of shape 701 ‘Peanut’ vases in PKT, PLC and PKC patterns after designs by Alfred Read and Guy Sydenham, c. 1953–5.

Across all industries teams of designers were beginning to reshape a world battered and bruised by conflict and Carter & Company was no different. A tight and experienced group of designers set about re-inventing the company’s products for a hungry new consumer. Alfred Read was the key designer supported by thrower, Guy Sydenham, and he had artists-cum-designers in his daughter Anne, as well as Ruth Pavely. Guy Sydenham had joined Poole Pottery in 1931, completing a seven-year apprenticeship working alongside James Radley Young, John Adams and Truda Carter. The war had interrupted Sydenham’s career, but he returned to Poole after military service, initially training apprentices and establishing the new production processes as the factory modernised after the conflict.
